The Queen of Bermuda is at it again with yet another Blowpop
production — Sybil's Pussycat
Dream Dolls.
If you don't already have tickets for tonight, don't even give it
another thought, as the show is already sold out. But there is still
hope for the two performances tomorrow night.
Show times for Sybil's Pussycat Dream Dolls are 8 p.m. for this
evening's performance, and 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. respectively for
tomorrow evening's showcases at the City Hall Theatre.
Sybil's Pussycat Dream Dolls' special celebrity guest Clarice
Taylor, who is an actress, was unable to attend, but Sybil
Barrington a.k.a. Mark Anderson told The Royal Gazette that
although he was disappointed, he did understand.
Mr. Anderson went on to explain that he had invited Ms Taylor,
best known for her role as Cliff Huxtable's mother on 'The Cosby
Show', as she was instrumental in his US career growth.
"She was my mentor and she was the one that got me my first gig
at Cotton Club," explained Mr. Anderson.
"I ended up at the Apollo and then the most popular was at
Copeland's Restaurant and it is where I opened for Cathy Sharpton,
who was the original singer for James Brown and now she is Rev. L.
Sharpton's wife."
However, the show still has a marvelous line up of female
impersonators as well as local singer Rochelle Simons Lecomte, who
was one of the first Bermudian women to be signed with a major
international recording label, and the Two Fools, Nadanja Bailey and
Jahrizno Simmons."
The female impersonators include Tyra Colbaire, Mirkala Crystal,
Kika Couture and Dominique
Shappelle.
"We are doing 'Dream Girls'," he said.
"Tyra is going to sing some songs from the new and the old Dream
Girls."
Tickets are $50 advance and $60 at the door. They are available
from Shannon's Boutique and at www.boxoffice.bm.
SCENE AND HEARD
ALL THE NEWS THAT FITS, WE PRINT.
It
may be holiday time, but last Wednesday it was more like Gay Pride as a
bountiful group of drag stars brought Yule tidings—and their most glamorous
pageant gowns—to Times Square. So, what brought divas Peppermint, Epiphany,
Britney Houston, Jiggly Cliente, Ariel Sinclair, Sahara Davenport,
Mirkala Crystal, and Melinda Thomas out into
the cold? It was all a big promotion for the new WB reality show Crowned,
which debuted that night after the finale of America's Next Top Model (yay,
Saleisha!). Considering the queens in Times Square were highly
entertaining—and the actual Crowned TV show was a total, royal bore—we think
they should make a new reality show based on these drag stars instead!
Peppermint turned up in as many places this week as the little candies she's
named for did, both in their holiday incarnations. Monday night at Barracuda
she celebrated her one-year anniversary at the venue, and in addition to
handing out pieces of her weave and pizza, she dazzled the crowd till 3am
with a wide variety of performances accompanied on and offstage by DJ T-Boy.

The most popular style of DRAG performance is a
lip-sync act. Every performer expresses "her" own individual and unique
style through her choice of material. It could be an eye popping, jaw
dropping show stopper from Broadway's past, or perhaps a 80's disco classic
or a wild Latin number with a sexy dance to go with it. "Like Mirkala's
award winning performances" Your private parties and Club entertainments
will never be forgotten when you bring on stage or on your party floor the
best.

Homo Dish - April 29, 2005
HX Mag.
Finally, we ended the week the
way we like to end our days, with scary drag queens yelling at us. That’s
right, we hit Trannyshack NYC at Splash, where everyone’s
favorite tranny hostess Sweetie turned it out as usual with her nasty
verbal antics and deliciously dirty ways. Her first victim - er, we mean
performer - of the night was the blood-spitting Duch, who spewed her
way through a track by the rock band Yeah Yeah Yeahs; next was the colorful
scenester Rainblo, who gave us an equally colorful monologue about
scat (mmm!). Mirkala
Crystal wowed the
crowd with her take on “Sweet Dreams,” this Latin energetic beauty is for
real. Her performances around town are very refreshing and while a gent named Will
performed “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” on his fiddle while showing off
his own fiddle in barely there underwear. The final contestant? Snow
White, sans dwarves, who sleazed through a cover of “Material Girl.”
Just as Walt Disney would have liked it, we’re sure. Now, back to business
as usual.…

Steve Aviles,
25, a cosmetologist from Queens, didn't need a wig. he scooped his
shoulder-length, curly reddish hair into a ponytail on top of his head and
fastened it with a sparkling rhinestone wrist cuff. Rummaging through his
makeup bag, he peered into the dressing room mirror and out-lined his sultry
lips, then added one more coat of mascara to his already impossibly thick
fake lashes. Standing behind him, Mr. Bobby Ojeda
a hospital professional from Queens, admired his long time companion. He smile
as Mr. Aviles did a pirouette in his purple long lame gown (size8), showing
off cleanly shaven legs, slim hips and stiletto pumps. Mr. Aviles clipped on
oversized rhinestone earrings. With a final touch of hair spray, Mr. Aviles,

Third appearance for Mirkala Crystal
with Sybil Barrington the Queen of Bermuda 2007
Hear

Sybil's Pussy Cat Dream Dolls was a joy to
behold.
The show featured seven female impersonators,
three from Bermuda, while the other four were from overseas.
The female impersonators included Miss
Mirkala Crystal, Miss
Kika Couture, and Miss Domanique
Shappelle, better known as The French Doll. Locally there was Joseph
(Joe) Ascento aka Miss Summer Isis, Dean Minors also known as Miss
Daffodil Daisy, and Ms Sybil Barrington aka Mark Anderson.
Also gracing the stage was Rochelle Simons
Lecomte. She was the only one to sing and did she sing, she
performed her rendition of the Supremes' 'River Deep Mountain High',
and Barbra Streisand's 'People'.
Mirkala Crystal, Kika Couture and Domanique
Shappelle all carried off their acts with professionalism and
aplomb.
The theme throughout the night was based on the
movie and stage play 'Dream Girls', with Miss Sybil Barrington as
the character Effie.
The audience was also treated to Domanique
Shappelle, in the most fabulous dresses ever, she had a gold floor
length number that showed just about every curve imaginable, while
her others included a white halter-styled hip-hugging sheath. Many
of her other frocks were of the same very elaborate scale.
Miss Barrington had the crowds laughing with her
comedy act, as she spoke about Middle Town versus other more
aesthetically pleasing neighbourhoods. "I live for drama, but not
that sort of drama, I don't need!" she said.
Also performing were the Two Fools – Nadanja
Bailey and Jahrizno Simmons – who offered renditions of Michael
Jackson and (the late) James Brown. Hilarious, is about the only
word that I can use to describe their antics.
They both did excellent renditions of the two,
with Mr. Bailey carrying off the soft voice and Moon Walk of Michael
Jackson with ease, while Mr. Simmons was chatting in the quick
talking fashion of the late great – donned in a sky blue suit with
the American flag across his vest. Miss Shappelle was perfect in her
little red feathered and beaded number as she performed to 'Nookie
Real Good'.
Some of the other songs included 'I Am Changing',
and the Dream Girls' song 'And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going', while
the second half opened with 'One Night Only', 'Wind Ya Body Up' and
'Don't Stop the Music'.
The Saturday early show was compact, did not
begin too late and offered up many talented individuals.

Onika Van Hamburg,
Miss Mirkala Crystal Latin Diva from NYC.
Miss Bermuda 1991 Diva Elizabeth Sanchez the
Third, Miss Michelle Dupree "a former Miss
Continental USA". Miss Luscious,
Miss Kit Holiday
and Miss Tyra Colbaire.
The female impersonators at the
Blow Pop Production, in City Hall Theatre, on Saturday night, wore a host of
skimpy and not so skimpy outfits for the show. They performed everything
from rock to Reggae with a few jazz, soul gospel classics tossed in for Good
measure.
Miss Michelle Dupree played
•singer/actress Marilyn Monroe
with quivering lips et al - the impersonation was excellent, she had on a to
die for* ivory silk gown with sequins and stones.
Ms Barrington lip synched to Patti
LaBelle number,
while Miss Kenya Black, who hails from California, came out in shortly short
blue boy shorts, pink stockings and an orangey colored top. ! She shook
herself up the aisle and onto a few unsuspecting audience members laps.
', Miss Kit Holiday, who sang songs from jazz diva Billy Holiday, was an
older woman, but came out with pure drama in her little 1930s red revealing
duress with a few flowers in her Hair.
As
Cher donned in rhinestones and draw stringed-legged
trousers, was Miss Mirkala Crystal.
She was
impressive and from a distance one could have easily been confused by the
resemblance.
The last time Miss Luscious
performed in Bermuda was during the Clay House Inn days, said Miss
Barrington. She wound up her hips and waved with intensity as she Performed
dancehall moves like Signal de Plane and others. Wearing a hot pink dress
and while seated on a chair with candles at her feet, Tyra Colbaire lip
synced to Sweet Love by Anita Baker.
Just One Thing by Amerie was
carried off graciously by Princess Onika Van Hamburg, while local Miss
Josephine Ascento danced about the stage in a white wedding gown - train and
all - to Cindy Lauper's Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
The audience screamed for her
although she got into a little trouble with Miss Sybil for raising her dress
a little too high. „ Miss Victoria Sanchez the Third dressed in a black see
through slip dress performed a bit of gospel. Slipping from out of the
curtains was Miss Kenya Black again. This time she was in a little hot pink
tankini with matching bikini bottoms to finish the ensemble. What happened
next will remain 'in the show'. Miss Michelle Dupree came back out with
something completely different.
This
time she was sporting a fitted jacket that was draped with red and silver
sequins and a ten-inch high wig, while she lip synced Original Sin by INXS
to screaming and applause. Shirley Bassey's song I Am What I Am, which
became a gay torch song, was performed with all the style and class of the
great Welsh diva by Miss Kit Holiday.
A performance of Li'l
Kim; Miss Luscious was highlighted -when she came out dressed in classic
non-suicidal orange over alls with jailbird written on the front. She soon
removed her gear only to reveal a sexy black leather number with chains all
over.
Not last and not at all least was a
futuristic performance by Miss Mirkala Crystal,
who with dramatic effect, performed-Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of- These) by
Annie Lennox.
She wore a silver bodysuit
with
a mirrored corset, shockingly blue contact lenses, and an expanding and
contracting. Silver-grey-sphere headpiece. There were several other great
performances by all, but far too many to mention in this piece. All in all
it was a great night filled with laughter and Barrington-filled drama.

Actually, Marilyn Monroe’s real name is Michelle Dupree,
and she’s not exactly a ‘she’. Put it this way:
Sybil Barrington and her
popular female impersonators are back again. This time, there’ll also be a
Cher impersonator "Mirkala Crystal",
and a Lil’ Kim impersonator (“We had to bring her from jail,” laughs Sybil).
Sybil’s stylist, Tyra Cobair, will also present a fashion show of her
designer line during the show. The clothes are, Sybil assures us, outfits
that women could wear every day and out to special events.
“There will be evening gowns, swimwear, casual wear... She makes all my
pieces, so I know they’re to die for,” she said. “I do know that a lot of
genuine women cannot wear the costumes that we portray onstage because of
theatrics, but I do know that the line that she’s created, they can wear to
a wedding, or out to Hamilton Princess — that’s if their husband takes them
out, because all my girlfriends are deserving of a good dinner and a good
night out!” Sybil said.
Presented by Blow Pop Productions, the event also gives Sybil, the Queen of
Bermuda, the chance to speak her mind.
“I’m going to talk about the homeless situation, especially women sleeping
in cars with children. I want to talk about the Trimingham’s situation — you
have people that have faithfully worked at these companies for years, and
they have been made redundant or laid off, but people still need to pay
their bills.”
Sybil says last year’s show was well attended — even by men. She hopes this
year will be equally successful, and says that she wants to thank the men
who attended from the top of her hair to the bottom of her heel.
She added, “I like to call it the love and laughter show, because that’s
what it’s all about — love and laughter and just having fun."
For Mirkala Crystal being Simply the Best
comes natural. Mirkala started as the Gloria Estefan of the nineties and
transformed her image as a multi talented Latina Female illusionist.
Simply put, she is "Simply the Best" Olga Tanon, Cher, Celine Dion, and
Gloria Estefan impersonator you will ever see. Her looks, her hair, her make
up and her costumes replicate the real-life persona of today music world
celebrities she impersonates . For the last ten years she has toured in
Puerto Rico, Bermuda, Chicago, Washington DC, Allentown Pa., and of course
New York City.
For over a decade,
Mirkala Crystal has mesmerized audiences with her
high-energy performances. Since the mid 90s, she has amassed an
extraordinary catalogue of collaborations and achievements.
By the
time you read this, you'll have about one month of summer left. If you
haven't been to Cherry Grove yet, here's an example of what you missed on
Saturday, July 17th 2004: DJ Denise "Twisted Dee" Gurney kept the huge crowd at
Cherry's moving and shaking with her play list of current hits and retro
disco classics. The place was packed! Cherry's also showcased

End
it, end it all now: I’ll go to Central Park to listen to the Dalai Llama and
I’ll spend hours seated in the lotus position take deep breaths mortifying
my flesh and remembering everything that they did to me and in an act of
almost total surrender I’ll forgive them and I’ll ask them publicly to
forgive me for having hated them so much. Afterwards I’ll enter Club Atlantis 2010 inhaling and exhaling
deeply, guiding myself by my third eye, I’ll ask for
Mirkala Crystal the
show goddess and
then I’ll get on the microphone and order everyone to practice compassion,
detach themselves from the material world and throw themselves into the void..

A
PROFESSIONAL FEMALE IMPERSONATOR FOR SERIOUS
... it's hard for me to describe my shows because I bring anything from
Latin, rock , classic disco , soulful diva vocals to the tribal rhythms. I try not to limit myself to specific genres , and I just
perform from the heart. Being a club performer since the early 90's,
I know that when people go to a club to see a drag show they want to enjoy
themselves, and leave the everyday hassles behind for a few hours. So when I'm on
stage, I do not just perform ... I take people on a journey of
drag
show education,
keeping everyone dancing in tribal harmony. Then I know I've succeeded in
doing my job. Mirkala
